Read that number the right way. It is not money you are losing — most variance is temperature, meter tolerance, and ordinary measurement noise, and most of it nets out. It’s the fuel value that moves through unverified: the part where an overcharge, a short delivery, or a missing BOL would look exactly like an honest one, because nothing checked it.
The point isn’t the total. It’s that the total is unexamined. The slice that’s a real, disputable loss is usually small — but you can’t tell which slice that is until someone reconciles the tank against the delivery ticket, every drop, every day. A variance over 150 gallons is worth disputing with your supplier; a receipt that never arrived can’t be disputed at all.
